Behold the Rearview Landscape

Behold the Rearview Landscape

I drive past Middle Creek Wildlife Area on my way to work. I’m used to seeing the surrounding fields and trees in the morning light as I drive forward. But the other day, I happened to glance in my rearview mirror after just rounding a turn—and the view took my breath away.

In my rearview mirror, I saw a wide, clean, snow-covered field stretched out from east to west in all its glory. It took up the entire mirror. It was beautiful! I had just traveled through that area and it looked same-old, same-old to me, yet it was neat to see the landscape from a different perspective in my rearview mirror.

It made me think of our clients—young moms who find themselves unexpectedly pregnant. They’re on a journey moving forward, making decisions that will not only impact where they head, but also what their life will look like in the “rearview mirror.”

For the client who chooses abortion for her baby, her immediate future might seem “better,”, but our experience with those clients is that “better” is an evil illusion. As they think about the child they lost and the fullness of what could have been, their rear view is often filled with grief so deep that only Jesus can heal them (and He does so willingly).

For the client who chooses life for her baby, her immediate future gets a little harder with sleepless nights and dirty diapers. But as the days turn into years and she looks in the rearview mirror, the goodness of God’s gift of her baby often fills her heart with joy.

In Revelation 22:13, God describes Himself this way: “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” God simultaneously sees our past and our future. He has a sovereign plan at work in our lives that is not thwarted by unexpected pregnancies or misguided abortions. His plan is for His glory and our good—any which way you look at it.
