The Veil Lifted
When Hazel first came to see us, she had a 10-month-old baby and was pregnant again. We noticed she took a bunch of the free baby food we had in the lobby. She later shared that she was homeless—that she and her baby had been sleeping on a friend’s sofa. She’d been trying not to feed the baby too often because she was worried about making a mess at her friend’s house.
Our hearts ached for her. We gave her a gift card to a local grocery store. We asked about her spiritual beliefs, which lead to a conversation about Jesus. She opened her heart widely to the truth and said yes to beginning a new relationship with Him! We gave her a Bible and some referrals to help her with food, housing, and finding a better job.
In the months that followed, Hazel’s walk with Jesus blossomed. She started going to church and reading the Bible with a friend each morning. She applied for a new job training program.
She said, “I know everything I’ve received from you has been a gift from God. I didn’t know how I was going to move forward before, but now I do.”
Hazel’s story reminds me of 2 Corinthians 3:16 and 18, which say, “…whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away… And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory.” Hazel is being transformed into the image of Jesus before our very eyes, and it’s incredible to behold.
Turning to the Lord helps a person see life more clearly, and the more we behold Him, the more glorious the transformation He makes in our lives.
