A Grandparent Example

A Grandparent Example

It was ultrasound day at our center. A young woman showed up for her scan and brought her boyfriend’s mom with her.  Soon after the ultrasound began, we got the first wonderful glimpse of the little baby on the screen. The boyfriend’s mom burst into tears. “I’m a grandma!” she whispered. “That’s my grandchild!”  Her son and our client were planning to move out of state, so our hearts went out to this new grandma as she processed the joy of seeing her first grandbaby mixed with sorrow over their moving away. We could tell she wanted to make the most of every moment she had with them,

In Genesis 48, we read of a tender moment involving Jacob, his son Joseph, and Joseph’s children. At that point in Jacob’s life, he could hardly see because of his age. During the visit, Jacob asked Joseph, “Are these your sons?”  Joseph said, “They are the sons God has given me here.” Then Jacob said, “Bring them to me so I may bless them.”

When God gives the gift of a baby to a young mom and dad, He simultaneously creates grandparents. He sees to it that grandparents are generally experienced adults who have been through parenting before and have gleaned wisdom from living decades of life.

Jacob sets a beautiful example for generations to come: “Bring them (the grandchildren) to me (the grandparent) so I may bless them.” We love seeing that life-giving dynamic unfold in our clients’ families. To God be the glory!
