Because They’re Helpless

Because They’re Helpless

A Sunday School teacher recently asked for ways her young class could support Align Life Ministries. At one point, she said – – “I wonder what would be a compelling reason that the children would have for helping your clients and their babies?”

Shortly after that I had the opportunity to teach a Sunday School class of elementary school boys and girls at a different church. Since I had those kids as a somewhat captive audience, I thought I’d ask them directly: Why would you want to help a baby? I got lots of different answers, as you might imagine – including “Because they are just so cute!” But the common thread across the answers those children gave to my question “why would you want to help a baby” was this: Because they’re helpless. Children want to help babies because babies can’t help themselves.

You know, kids seem to have a natural beautiful instinct when it comes to serving those more helpless than they are. And really, friends, ALL of us are helpless in a sense before God Almighty. I think of excerpts from the passage about Jerusalem in Ezekiel 16, where God says, “On the day you were born your cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water to make you clean…no one looked on you with pity or had compassion enough to do any of these things for you. Rather, you were thrown out into the open field…Then I passed by and saw you kicking about in your blood…and I said to you, “Live!”

Our natural inclination to help the helpless live is nothing less than us reflecting God’s actions toward you and me. We have all been created for Him.
