The Abortion Pill – A Quick Review

The Abortion Pill – A Quick Review

When a young mom is facing an unintended pregnancy and considering abortion, one of the options she’ll likely explore nowadays is the abortion pill. In 2021, more than half the abortions performed in Pennsylvania were via the abortion pill. It’s important to know what this is, so let’s quickly review…

The abortion pill is actually a set of two pills that pregnant women can take to end their pregnancy. The first pill, mifepristone, cuts off the supply of blood and nutrients to the developing baby. The second pill, misoprostol, is taken 24 to 48 hours after the first pill. It causes the uterus to contract and expel the baby.

The abortion pill poses significant health risks to the mother which she may not be aware of. Some of our most heartbreaking moments are when we sit with clients who’ve had an abortion via these pills and they say, “I had no idea…” or “No one ever told me…”

Pregnancy resource centers like ours do not provide or refer for abortions. Instead, we provide free, truth-filled services like pregnancy tests, options education and first trimester ultrasounds to our precious young mom clients. Biblically, these women are our neighbors, and we do what Ephesians 4:25 says, “…let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.”

A desperate client may have abortion pills in her purse when she walks into our center – perhaps trying one more avenue of help before she goes home to take those pills. We would never know. But, we love her in the name of Jesus, and serve her with truth in hopes that she’ll make a life-giving decision for herself and her baby.
